A Little Bit of Background

All stories have a beginning. Mine began in 1979 when my parents decided to procreate. I won’t pretend to have memories from the womb, although if the amount of brain activity I experience daily is any indication, the last months of 1979 saw millions of thoughts erupting into my forming brain.

January 29, 1980. It was a Tuesday. My mom went into labor sometime the night before, but didn’t think it was necessary to tell anyone. Who wants to spend one second longer in the hospital than absolutely necessary? When it became (painfully) obvious that I was going to make my grand entrance into the world, she gave in and called the doctor to meet her at the hospital. I was born at 8:38 pm, kicking and screaming I’m sure. The nurses whisked me away to be cleaned up, my dad followed his beautiful baby girl, and my mom was left lying there without so much as a blanket. That turned out to be a not-so-minor detail that infuriated the doctor when he returned to see her shivering and alone.

Fast forward four years….my parents were so overjoyed with their super amazing, incredibly intelligent, beautiful little girl that they decided to try to recreate the miracle. In October 1984, my baby sister was born. Oh she was cute, and being the little mama I was, I was thrilled to be a big sister. I won’t say it was a fairy tale, but we eventually got to the happy ending part. My astoundingly wise parents had given me the greatest gift they possibly could…a best friend.

Fast forward sixteen years. Y2K didn’t end the world, so at the way too young age of 20, I thought the only logical thing to do was get married. 2004 proved to be the year of “Be Careful What You Ask For.” I always thought it would be so cool to have twins. Well, prayer answered! My handsome son and beautiful daughter entered our world in February and changed my life forever. Hands down, without a doubt, being trusted with these two precious angels is my greatest gift, most serious responsibility, most rewarding endeavor in life.

Fast forward another sixteen years. I’m now the stressed out mother of two SIXTEEN YEAR OLDS!!! Remember when I said having twins would be “so cool?’ Well, most of the time, it is. But there were some things I didn’t think about…like buying twice the diapers, having two car seats in the backseat, needing a double stroller, the Terrible Twos x 2, potty training TWO children at once, and now having TWO new teenage drivers in the house. Thank God the insurance doesn’t go up until they pass the test!!!

Okay, so that’s not even the Cliffs Notes version of the past 40 years, but I did say it was A LITTLE BIT of background. I’ve said for years that if I wrote a book about the adventures of our family, it would be a best seller. Well, I don’t have a publisher, and I’m not disciplined enough to sit down and write a novel, so this blog is gonna have to do. Sometimes serious, sometimes funny, but always real.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.
